In 1956 Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Scientist of Russia, Laureate of Lenin and State Prizes George S. Wildgrube headed the Special Design Bureau of Electro-Vacuum Devices. The Bureau began development of transmitting and receiving tubes for broadcast television, industrial television and defense engineering of the USSR.

In 1963 the Bureau was renamed to All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Electron Beam Devices (VNIIELP). The Institute created transmitting television devices for the Ostankino All-Union Television Center.

In 1970 Research and Production Association “Electron” was established on the basis of VNIIELP with serial plants in Nalchik and Vladikavkaz with total staff of about 12 thousand specialists.

In 2000 by decree of Russian Federation President “Electron” was transformed into Open Joint Stock Company “Central Research Institute “Electron” (OJSC “NRI “Electron”) and became the basic research center in the field of development and production of television photoelectronic devices (electrovacuum and solid state photosensitive devices and modules based on them).

From 2000 OJSC “NRI “Electron” is part of the holding company “Ruselectronics”, as well as from 2009 is part of “Russian Engineering Union”.

Stages of development of OJSC “NRI “Electron”

1. The first photoelectronic devices in Space (1956-1975)

One of the most important directions of Institute activity is participation in Space research. For example, Institute developed photoelectronic devices PMT-15 and 8LK, which permitted to get image of the Moon back side in 1959.

Thanks to similar PMTs in 1965-1973 on the spacecrafts “Mars-4” and “Mars-5” the first pictures of the Martian surface were obtained.

2. Photoelectronic television devices for country telecentres equipment, devices for the Olimpic Games broadcast (1970-1980).

Creation of the first new generation domestic transmitting devices for broadcast television (gletticon) and equipping with them of 80 USSR telecentres.

3. Television images from far Space (1970-1990)

From 1970-73 photoelectronic devices are created for equipment of survey and control of “Lunokhod-1” and “Lunokhod-2” apparatuses. Later, in the 80-ies, photomultiplier tubes were used to produce the first color images of Venus.

Also in 1983 with the help of hypersensitive superorthicon LI230 a small planet in the Solar system ¹ 4080 (“Galinsky”) was discovered. In the period from 1985 to 1986 on the base of original CCD device on the interplanetary station “Vega-2” nearly 700 images of Halley’s Comet were obtained.

4. A new generation of photoelectronic television devices (1990-2015)

In 2006 OJSC “NRI ”Electron” participated in the international nuclear CMS project at CERN (Switzerland), namely, supplied 16000 radiation hard with high immunity to magnetic field PMT-188 for Hadron Collider. For successful execution of these works “Electron” was awarded the Gold CMS Prize “For contribution to the creation of Compact Muon Solenoid”.

OJSC “NRI “Electron” is among the contractors on the Federal Program “Development of electronic component base and radio electronics”.

The lisence received from RosCosmos (¹697K of June 27, 2007) allows OJSC “NRI “Electron” to carry out the development of photoelectronic devices, unified thermal imaging modules, image intensifiers, and night vision devices (EKÏC, group 58 and 59) for space systems.

Awards and prizes

1. In 1958 exposition of Special Design Bureau of Electro-Vacuum Devices (transmitting television tubes (super-iconoscopes, super-orthicons) and PMTs) was awarded the “Grand Prix” of the World Exhibition in Brussels.

2. Lenin and 5 State Prizes of the USSR and the Russian Federation for the development and implementation of photoelectronic and transmitting television devices, allowing to solve the most important state tasks in the field of broadcast television, defense and space programs (1965-1988).

3. The Order of the Red Banner of Labor in 1976.

4. 5 gold and 1 silver medals at the exhibition in Brussels for the original developments (“Eureka-98” fingerprinting TV system, night vision device MH-201P) (1998, 2002).

5. CMS Gold Award of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for its contribution to international research project – supply of 16000 photomultiplier tubes to create an electronic calorimeter for the Large Hadron Collider (2007).

The Institute constantly maintains relations with large organizations of Russian Academy of Sciences (Ioffe Institute, Kurchatov Nuclear Energy Institute, General Physics Institute, Space Research Institute, etc.), as well as Scientific Centers and Industrial Enterprises in Russia and CIS countries. It has contracts of strategic partnership with Saint Petersburg Polytechnical University and Saint Petersburg State Electrotechnical University. In addition, it has a successful foreign economic activity with European countries, USA and countries of Southeast Asia.

Management of the Institute adopted a strategy aimed at maintaining of the scientific and industrial potential, development of promising areas to ensure the relevance of the enterprise in the future.
